What Are Fillers?

Smooth skin and full lips with well-accentuated borders are associated with youth and beauty. The aging process results in loss of skin tone, contour changes and wrinkles. Traditionally, these have been treated by plastic and/or cosmetic surgical techniques, e.g. facelift. However, there are now many non-surgical cosmetic techniques that can achieve similar results without the risks, recovery time and costs associated with surgery.

Dermal fillers have become popular in treating contour defects and lines associated with ageing. There are many different types of dermal fillers available and it is important that you are aware of these differences before proceeding with treatment. Dr. Bird will discuss the different product options with you to help determine which option is suitable for you. It is possible to combine this with other cosmetic procedures – like BOTOX®.

The procedure will be fully explained to you during your consultation. The injection procedure is commonly performed using a local anesthetic injection (similar to that used by a dentist) to numb the treatment area. The injection is painless.

Other Alternatives

People with severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or presence of multiple severe allergies should not use Juvederm™. Patients who are using blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as with any injection, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Please inform us if you are using any blood thinning medications.

There may be some redness and tenderness at the injections site, and some post-injection bruising, or mild swelling, which usually resolves itself within a few days. If laser treatment, chemical peeling, or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Juvederm™ injectable gel, there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site. Juvederm™ is FDA approved.

Restylane® filler is a clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance, called hyaluronic acid. Restylane® creates volume, filling in folds and wrinkles. Restylane® is intended for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements. Restylane® Fine Lines, is the same product, with a smaller molecule. It is used for correcting thin superficial lines, around the mouth, for example, forehead lines and smile lines.
